Virgin Holidays will open its on-the-beach departure lounge this summer

Departure Beach will allow guests checking out of Barbados to spend a little longer by Carlisle Bay’s crystal-clear Caribbean waters.

With the emergence of facial recognition technology and intelligent, moveable check-in kiosks, airports are evolving at a rapid rate. Now, this evolution has spread to the departure gate in spectacular fashion.

This summer, Virgin Holidays will open the world’s first ‘departure beach’ in Barbados. Available for customers whose holiday ends on the Caribbean island, the air-conditioned lounge comes with a bag-drop facility, shower and changing facilities, and free refreshments.

Guests who wish to use Departure Beach are picked up from their hotel after their breakfast, with their hold luggage taken straight to the airport. On arrival, they can check in to their flight, get their boarding pass, and store their hand luggage in a locker.

They’re then free to use the facilities – namely the beach, where towels and small storage bags are provided. They can also head upstairs to use the free wi-fi, plasma screens or console-equipped children’s area.

Departure Beach is located at Brownes Beach in Carlisle Bay.
