Our top five picks from the 2018 Pinterest 100

Moroccan spices, traditional workwear, next-level lashes – these are the trends that matter from the just-released Pinterest 100.

From north African spices to the return of traditional workwear, Pinterest has revealed its top 100 trends to try in 2018. And the following five caught our eye, largely because they resonated with our own research.

5. Sweet heat from Morocco

Saves for ‘Moroccan’ are up a whopping 2,579%, according to Pinterest’s global data. And some of the most searched-for spices are coriander, cumin and cardamom. In August, Stylus’ Food Influencer Round-up: Africa predicted that the entire continent is “ready to take the gastronomic reins on a global level”.

4. Back to workwear

Traditional workwear is, Pinterest says, “inspiring modern staples no guy should be without”, with searches for ‘corduroy’, ‘trucker jacket’ and ‘chore coat’ up 160%. Thanks to emerging Americana influences, workwear is big in female fashion, too. In October, Stylus’ S/S 18: Dresses report explored the emergence of “rustic, dustbowl-inspired apron and pinafore dresses” and “homespun recycled effects”.

3. Next-level lashes

“All eyes,” says Pinterest, “are on long, lush lashes and how to get them” – indeed, searches for ‘lashes’ are up 152%. But it’s not just long lashes; it’s how quickly, and easily, they can be applied. Stylus’ recent report from BeautyCon London profiled Lash Perfect’s Lash FX Magnetise Lashes, which are fast to apply thanks to magnets that bind them to real lashes in a single click.

2. Toys from trees

Pinterest searches for ‘wooden toys’ are up 173%. Plastic, then, is apparently passé – something backed up by recent Stylus report Twists on Traditional Toys. It profiled Japanese brand Kiko+, which updates traditional wooden toys in line with modern children’s expectations.

Saves for ‘local travel’ are up 146%, which shows that travellers want authentic, real-deal experiences in actual neighbourhoods – not just tourist traps. Earlier this month, Stephany van Willigenburg Google’s UK head of travel, and James McClure, Airbnb’s general manager for northern Europe, told us pretty much exactly the same thing.
